This calculator has four modes to cover the most common percentage questions. Switch between them using the tabs at the top of the calculator.
% Of: Find what X% of a number is (e.g., 15% of $250 = $37.50). % Change: Calculate the percentage increase or decrease between two values. Discount: Find the sale price after a percentage discount. Tip: Calculate tip amount and split the bill between multiple people.
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. Formula: (number ร percent) รท 100. For example, 20% of 150 = (150 ร 20) รท 100 = 30. Or simply move the decimal: 20% = 0.20, so 150 ร 0.20 = 30.
Formula: ((New Value โ Old Value) รท |Old Value|) ร 100. If a stock goes from $80 to $100, the change is ((100 โ 80) รท 80) ร 100 = +25%. If it drops from $100 to $80, the change is ((80 โ 100) รท 100) ร 100 = โ20%. Note that a 25% gain followed by a 20% loss does not return you to the starting point.
Standard US tipping: 15% for adequate service, 18โ20% for good service, 20โ25% for excellent service. In Europe, 5โ10% is typical and sometimes optional. Use the tip mode to split the bill evenly among your group and see exactly what each person owes.
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to find the savings: $200 ร 20% = $40 saved. Subtract from the original: $200 โ $40 = $160 final price. You can also calculate directly: $200 ร (1 โ 0.20) = $200 ร 0.80 = $160. The calculator handles all of this instantly.
